Te Hana Te Ao Marama is excited to offer a series of contemporary and traditional flax weaving workshops during October and November 2025. These workshops will take place on the first Tuesday of each week from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, with morning tea included.
Workshop Venue
The workshops will be held in the whare wānanga at Te Hana Te Ao Marama, providing a safe and welcoming space for learning.
The workshops will be led by a qualified weaver and an assistant weaver, who will guide participants through:
Correct Flax Cutting Techniques: Teaching sustainable harvesting practices.
Flax Preparation and Dyeing: Preparing the flax and learning the art of dyeing.
Weaving Creations: Participants will create:
A putiputi posy with a whāriki wrap.
A four-corner kete, perfect as Christmas gifts for their whānau.
About Te Hana Te Ao Marama
Te Hana Te Ao Marama is governed by seven trustees from Ngāti Whātua. The trust is dedicated to providing educational programs that include:
Pōwhiri and Marae Noho experiences.
Weaving and traditional games.
Kapa Haka and learning the tikanga and protocols of a marae.
